AN INVITATION TO JOIN KAANA ON 26TH JANUARY 2013
Dear Friend,
This is your invitation to be part of the continuing story of Kaana by coming to the Annual General Meeting, which will be on Saturday 26th January 2013 at 6.00 pm at St Andrew’s Church Centre, Weald Drive, Furnace Green, Crawley, RH10 6NU.
There will be a short AGM to cover the formal part of our business as a registered charity. You will find an agenda with this invitation.
As the AGM finishes we will go into an African Evening with refreshments and entertainment. The wearing of African dress is strongly encouraged! There will be no charge for the event but members and supporters are asked to donate generously to meet its costs and to contribute to the general work of Kaana.
If you have not already done so please become a member of “Kaana”. You will be able to take part in our formal business, but just as important, it is a way of confirming your commitment to be a partner with us in our work. Organisations and groups can join as corporate members.
Membership application forms will be available at the AGM, but if you cannot get to the meeting, there is a simple link for joining on this page on our web site
( www.kaana.org.uk ). There is no membership fee but please consider confirming your commitment by making an entry donation of your choice.

Dear Supporters,
You will know of my work and the charity Kaana which aims to eliminate the need for children and babies to be used to beg on the streets of Kampala. This is achieved by working closely with the Karamojong community, providing the women with skills to earn a living and supporting longer term projects to provide agricultural and educational facilities to the community.
During my travels, I met some Irish farmers who in 2009 broke the Guinness world record for the most combine harvesters working simultaneously in a field. They lost the record to the Canadians in 2010. However they have asked me to join them, drive a combine harvester and help get it back!
Combines 4 Charity was established in 2009 in a bid to set a new world record for having the most combine harvesters working simultaneously in the same field. This record was achieved on August 15th 2009 with 175 combine harvesters working alongside each other. The event raised €300,000 for 4 Irish charities namely Barnardos, Gary Kelly Cancer Support, Self Help Africa and the National Rehabilitation Trust.
On July 21st Combines 4 Charity intend to reclaim this record and in doing so raise funds for their chosen charities.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to raise much needed funds for the Karamojong women’s business projects.
I promise to post some pictures of me driving a combine harvester!
Please support Kaana and sponsor this World Record attempt at www.charitygiving.co.uk/maureenmwagale

Many thanks to "Plane Crazy", the Holbrook Club and all who attended in January. It was an excellent event and a massive £2,435 was raised for Kaana. Thank you! |
Kaana in the London Marathon!
Geoff Parker, running in support of Kaana, completed his 6th London Marathon breaking his goal of 3 hours 50 mins by 10 minutes and 20 seconds. Geoff also exceeded his target of raising £1000 for Kaana. If you would like to sponsor Geoff, it's not too late, visit his Charity Giving page at http://www.charitygiving.co.uk/geoffparker

The first batch of candle moulds, which has been sourced from India, was delivered to Uganda for use by the first group of ten women who have been trained in candle making. The money for purchasing these moulds was raised by the Women's African Dinner.

A hugely successful and fun evening. The Mayor of Crawley, Carol Eade, was guest of honour. Over £700 was raised to buy candle making moulds for the women of Karamoja. Special thanks to the ladies who donated some of the dresses.

Breakthrough visit to Karamoja |
|
|
|
|
One of the things which became clear from Maureen Mwagale’s Christmas 2010 trip to Uganda was that the obtaining of land was more complicated than at first appeared to be the case. Maureen and the Trustees therefore agreed that she needed to be there on the spot again to bring all the deals with tribal elders and government officials to a successful conclusion. As a result Maureen made a further trip at short notice at the end of February.
The visit was a great success. Kaana has been able to obtain two sites in the Napak District, each of about 50 acres. One will be used to build the school plus health and community facilities. The other will be for the agricultural project, which is intended to economically support the whole enterprise and be a valuable source of employment for people in the community.
The agricultural land will be the first to be developed, because we want to start in time for the rains in June. There is also a need to make a quick start on one of the projects to build the confidence of the local community and their elders. Trustees have therefore agreed in principle to a project to clear some of the land so that local Karamajong can be employed to do the planting of cassava and maize. The final go-ahead will be given in late March when the costs and details are worked out.
Below is a picture of the land being surveyed.

The work will start using existing Kaana funds. The project will, however, involve levels of activity and expenditure greater than we have experienced so far. For example we need to make bore holes and storage facilities to provide water on the site.
We think that these are projects to which many supporters will want to contribute. As soon as the details are finalised we will let you know how your support will make these projects a success for a community in Karamoja.

To stop babies from begging |

The following poem was written in Uganda for Kaana 12/11/2010
It is one O'Clock here The sun is bright and hot There is a loud clap Neighbour in next office asks Orutaro rwatandikira okwe? As if war is indeed expected. I get to my feet The red earth outside my window Is dotted with circling shadows There are more claps There are louder claps There are more shadows The bats of Bat Valley Have taken to the air In broad day light Bright hot day. Now cars are darting There by Emerald Hotel People are running I pray there will not be more orphans In the direction of Kisekka Market The shots are continuing Always threatening to add To the woman's mission To stop babies from begging.
Iga Zinunula
Notes:
When bats come out in broad day light, they are “flying in the dark”. On 4th November 2010, the Mail on Sunday of the UK ran a story on Maureen Mwagale, a Ugandan woman living in the UK, making effort to get Karimojong children off Kampala streets. A week later, November 12th, my mind was on her when gunshots rang out. Among other causes, guns have contributed to the numbers of children on Kampala streets. The unpredictability of it all makes bats fly in the dark.
